Computers 101 Goals and Objectives
Mrs. Therese Morin
School Year 2007-2008
The technology curriculum for all grade levels at Saint Catherine of Siena Elementary School is being implemented based upon the Diocesan Technology Framework and with the goal of assisting students in mastering or expanding proficiency of grade level standards in all curricular areas. The technology usage at St. Catherine will provide enhanced learning opportunities for all students from pre-K through the sixth grade. The goals and class objectives for Computers 101 is broken down in the following three main components where each topic will be adjusted accordingly to each grade level capability.
In this goal, the students will learn and understand the proper usage of the computer. This includes understanding what are the various features and tools a computer provides (e.g. calculator, windows explorer, paint utility), how to customize one’s desktop environment, and the importance of the main parts of a computer. Appropriate software programs will be used to help develop age-appropriate keyboarding and mouse skills for all students. Furthermore, each student, with the exception of pre-K, will be provided his/her own login account to develop the understanding of personal ownership and security of his/her work.
Rules and regulations on using the computer will be strictly enforced. The meaning of security, safety, moral and ethics usage of the computer will be discussed in the computer classes. Educational game will also be used to enhance the students learning on how to install and use other software media and tools.
This goal will implement and expand the imagination of each student. Each student will learn the features of various software applications including:
- Microsoft Word, Notepad, and/or WordPad
- Power Point
- Microsoft Excel
- Front Page
Computer labs will be designed to help the students learn how to follow instructions, explore the features of each software application, and to display his/her own creativity that was put into one’s project.
The goal for incorporating Intra- and Internet in the computer class is to demonstrate the proper usage of using the World Wide Web, the various search engines, downloading techniques, how the internet can be helpful in research, the concept of networking, and, most important, teaching internet safety and ethics. Computer labs will be designed to help the students to learn how to evaluate the value and accuracy of information obtained from the Internet and other sources.
The students will learn the concept of networking within the intranet by copying files from one computer to another. In addition, students will learn how to add printers to their environment and will be encouraged to print their work on a local and network printers.
This goal will further expand a child’s knowledge and ability to put the tools one has learned throughout the year by introducing the procedures of creating a web page
